GASA* also presents a unique take on the world through its incorporation of tastes found in the various native dress of Japan, the Middle Ages of the West, and the mountainous regions of China. “Native outfits were what provoked the biggest response in me when I was doing research. I wanted to convey that same sense of handmade warmth, and the desire just sort of built up within me.”
¦New creations with local material producers
GASA* was launched it 1994 and opened its first boutique in 2002.
Looking to grow even further, the label made its first overseas presentation in 2007 when it participated in a group exhibition in Paris.
“Unlike Japan, people overseas pay attention to things like materials and natural coloring using dyes from plants or ink. In particular, our knitwear made with Japanese washi paper received a big response.”
Igarashi also expresses a desire to work in the future with local material producers regardless of whether they are domestic or located overseas if they have a technique unique to their region like lace or hand-weaving.
Other goals for the brand include thinking of ways to advance overseas while at the same time further developing their store.
“We hope to increase the number of places where we can present GASA* throughout the entire building, including even the process of reaching the boutique.”
